AKC Scent Work

What is Scent Work?

AKC Scent Work is a fun and engaging sport for dogs and their owners that taps into a dog’s natural ability to use their incredible sense of smell. Inspired by professional detection work, this activity involves teaching your dog to search for specific odors, such as essential oils like birch, anise, or clove, hidden in a variety of environments. Dogs learn to locate the scent and alert their handler, showcasing their problem-solving skills and keen noses. Scent Work is suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes, making it a great way to build confidence, strengthen your bond, and provide mental and physical stimulation. Whether you participate competitively or just for fun, it’s a rewarding activity that celebrates your dog’s instincts and talents.

One of the best things about scent work is that it is suitable for pretty much all dogs and all handlers. If you find that agility is a bit too much or you don't have as much training time as you'd like, scent work is a great alternative.
